Description: Englishman Jonathan Maltus purchased this property in 1994 and since then has added a number of other more impressively sited vineyard holdings. Teyssier itself is a soft and attractive, relatively forward, spicy Saint-Emilion full of fleshy, dark, plummy fruit. It is sourced from the low-lying vineyards in the south of the appellation and is a testament to what can be achieved from these lesser sites. Vinification is modern, as with all the wines here, with pre-fermentation maceration, malolactic in barrel and ageing on lees for added richness. Château Laforge is produced from a number of superior Grand Cru sites, including the Le Chatelot vineyard purchased from Château CANON in 2000. The wine is rich and supple, finely structured and with impressive depth and concentration. The high Merlot content (92%) of the blend accounts for its opulent, exotic style. Le DÔME is the top red label and comes from a single parcel neighbouring Château ANGELUS. There is also an excellent barrel-fermented white, Clos Nardian, which blends all 3 white Bordeaux varieties. The Muscadelle comes from vines planted in the mid-1930s. Sourced from 3 tiny, ideally exposed parcels in limestone soils just across the river Dordogne south of the Saint-Emilion AC, this is a rich and complex, subtly oaked white. New from the 2004 vintage were LES ASTÉRIES, a super-premium low yielding cuvée and Château Grand Destieu. To these have been added Le Carré, a single vineyard red from a site that abuts Clos FOURTET. New from 2008 has been an additional red label, Vieus Château Mazerat, part of the original vineyard of which produced LE DÔME. Maltus also now makes wine in California at World’s End Wines in the Napa Valley. The most recent development is the hiring of Jacques Lurton, who has made wine with his brother François in France, Spain and South America. Jacques will not only consult for Bordeaux whites but also a new range of wines in the Napa Valley.
