Description: Charles Melton Wines is an iconic boutique estate in South Australia's Barossa Valley. Charlie moved to the Valley as a young lad in 1974. He honed his winemaking skills under the tutelage of Peter Lehmann and established the first vintage of Charles Melton Wines in 1984. He purchased 13 acres of grenache and shiraz soon after and built the existing cellar door and winery on Krondorf Road, just outside Tanunda. Since then, the boutique estate has gained international recognition for fine red table wines. Today the estate encompasses over 50 acres of prime Barossa Vineyard. Charles Melton wines are crafted with quiet patience to reflect the rhythm of the seasons and the richness of the earth. Charlie Melton was one of the first to recognize the value and tradition of the Barossa's historic old vineyards. At a time when others were pulling out shiraz and grenache to plant more fashionable varieties, Charlie was convincing farmers to conserve them. He was one of a small group of winemakers who helped retain the viticultural heritage of the Barossa. He remains an inspiration to many of the Valley's young guns today.
Tasting Note: Medium red-purple; complex, ripe, scented spicy/cherry fruit aromas provide a most attractive start; the medium-bodied palate flows logically on, with soft, ripe, spicy/cherry fruit, and subtle but complementary oak. Vaguely reminiscent of some of the best wines from the 1989 vintage.
